Explore Brazil’s Spiritist Psychiatric Hospitals & Community Centers

Experience the Transformative Power of Spiritist Treatments
Discover a unique approach to mental health that integrates the spiritual, biological, and emotional dimensions of healing.
The Spiritist paradigm—a pioneering force in Integrative Mental Health—embraces spirituality in an open, inclusive way while taking a careful, minimal approach to psychiatric medication.
While many have heard of Brazil’s remarkable healers, few have witnessed the depth of transformation within the country’s 50 Spiritist hospitals and 13,000 community centers. These places illuminate a powerful model of care that unites science, compassion, and spirituality.

Learning Objectives

Envision psychiatric hospitals where clinicians recognize spiritual emergency, stabilize safely, and help integrate heightened sensitivity without pathologizing it.
Describe free community centers where trained sensitives support spiritual emergence, teach grounding skills, and reduce isolation and hospitalization risk.
Outline a Spiritist care model that blends clinical discernment with spiritual support, guided by clear ethics, roles, and protocols.
Teach a body–mind–spirit paradigm emphasizing spiritual healing, practiced in Spiritist healthcare traditions since the late 1800s.
Integrate complementary methods—energy healing, medical intuition, blessed water, spirit-release therapy, and non-drug spiritual development practices.
Seed global transformation by spreading spiritually competent, humane mental healthcare through training, frameworks, and adoptable care models.

Lead Instructor: Emma Bragdon, PhD — author of Kardec’s Spiritism and Resources for Extraordinary Healing, and editor of Spiritism and Mental Health, a volume featuring Spiritist psychiatrists, psychologists, and international researchers exploring Spiritist Therapies.

Small Group: Experiential Learning

Join a small group of no more than ten participants on an intimate, guided journey led by Emma Bragdon, PhD.
Throughout the trip, Emma introduces each part of the experience as we explore Spiritist hospitals and centers through:
On-site tours and presentations
Research updates and clinical observations
Live demonstrations of diagnosis and treatment by medical intuitives and Spiritist mediums
Optional firsthand participation in Spiritist therapies
You’ll have the chance to experience readings by medical intuitives and observe (or receive) “disobsession” sessions—a Spiritist practice similar to exorcism—performed by Brazilian psychiatrists, MDs, and experienced mediums working within Spiritist psychiatric hospitals.
Witness teams of 8–10 mediums working in syntonie—a Portuguese term meaning oneness or exquisite harmony—as they help patients achieve remarkable transformation, including individuals once unresponsive to traditional treatments such as those with schizophrenia.
These Spiritist hospitals, unique to Brazil and respected worldwide, have refined this integrative model of care for over 90 years—addressing body, mind, and spirit. Their approach includes attention to nutrition, homeopathic remedies, herbal medicine, and micronutrients to restore health and balance naturally.

What Previous Students Have Said

“I arrived in Brazil a physician full of questions armed with experiences in integrative medicine, but was a novice with the spiritual aspect of healing. My two weeks with Emma Bragdon, PhD immersed in Spiritism… have changed my spiritual paradigm, and shown me the path from physician to healer. The personal shift is undeniable – the outward expression of this shifting unfathomable.”
Shawn Tassone, MD, PhD, and author of “Spiritual Pregnancy”, Austin, Texas
“I highly recommend Emma Bragdon. She has solid professional credentials and many years of impressive work as a scholar. Emma has a great personality and she creates many rich opportunities which would be completely unavailable to those with less knowledgeable, experienced, and insightful guides.”
Karen Ziegler, MSN, MDiv, DMin, Nurse Practitioner; Faculty, Duke U. School of Medicine
“It was a fabulous week indeed. I am back to work and the more I try to describe it, the more I realize how amazing it was to be guided so intimately into another culture and to experience an integrative health system that is so grounded and rooted in respect and compassion for those challenged by mental illness. It was so inspiring to meet doctors who are Spiritist and to see how seamlessly they blend heart and science. Thank you for providing this opportunity. You are a bridge to a new way of looking at health and spirituality. The trust and relationships you have developed are what make this program remarkable.”
Susan Ortiz, MD, Director of Maine Holistic Center, Bangor, Maine
“After spending most of my adult life in Psych Hospitals as a psychiatric nurse… to see a staff of Mediums, and Drs. working as mediums in clinics and hospitals our trip to Brazil remains a top experience for me.”–
Jessie Haugabook, RN
“Dr. Bragdon skillfully prepares you for an experience that without her guidance, would be mediocre at best. As your personal guide, her tour guarantees a wonderful experience with mediumship as practiced in Brazil.”
John L. Turner, MD, Neurosurgeon, Author: Medicine, Miracles and Manifestations, Hawaii
“This trip is transformative! –
Pam Shervanick, psychiatrist
